Habits I have implemented so far this year, and how they're going.
The new year is the perfect time to try again at becoming the best version of yourself. The gyms are always rammed with people swearing they will get ripped this year, social media is flooded with 'new year, new me' resets and that girl routines like always and lets be real, it usually lasts until the end of January until most people fall back into routine.
In fact, 80% of people break their new year's resolutions by mid-February. 80%!! That is insane. So when I was deciding what I wanted to achieve this year, I sat down and really thought about it. What goals could I set that were aspirational but not unsustainable? Eventually, I settled on trying out some new habits that would improve my life bit by bit. So, here are some new habits I am implementing this year to try and level up my life, and how they are working out so far.
No social media half an hour before bed- I love to doom scroll. Especially on Tik Tok, I can go down a rabbit hole of night routines, elaborate skin care trends and pilates mom's vlogs and emerge 6 hours later feeling crap about myself and groggy. So when I decided to try and get off my phone before bed, I set a realistic goal of 30 minutes to wean myself off, so to speak. So far, I would say I'm doing ok. Most days I have it nailed and read my book instead, but the past week I've caught myself reaching over, so this is something I am going to keep at until I don't want my phone at all at night.
Daily affirmations- I see this all the time on social media, people writing reams and reams of affirmations and talking to themselves in the mirror. This is not my vibe. I knew I would give up in five minutes if I tried this because I would feel silly, but I still wanted to work on my self love. So instead I downloaded an app called Mantra that pops up with affirmations on my phone three times a day, low effort, easy, and makes me feel good! So far, obsessed.
Wake up earlier- Not 5am or something daft but I wanted to stop rolling out of bed at 10am. I found that the more I slept in the more groggy I started to feel, and plus, I have stuff to do! My goal was to wake up between 7:30 and 8am on weekdays and so far I'm doing well! The key to this was changing my alarm tone. Every time my alarm went off I wanted to throw my phone against the wall, but since I've changed it to 'constellation' I wake up feeling like a fairy floating through the woods, and who wouldn't want that?
There's other, bigger goals that I want to achieve this year but these tiny changes to my routine will hopefully boost my energy, self worth and productivity and help me reach them. I can already feel the effect that they are having and ultimately hope that these little steps add up to make a big difference.
So don't feel pressured to do crazy, big things to keep up with the Joneses. Think about what works for you and your life and adjust your habits to accommodate that and slowly the progress will come. And I will let you know if I've given up on mine by Feb!
